COURSE DESCRIPTION
English Language Arts 2 builds on foundational literacy skills through a structured, research-based approach. Students continue to strengthen phonics and word analysis skills, applying decoding and encoding strategies to read and spell increasingly complex words, including multisyllabic and irregularly spelled words, with growing accuracy and automaticity. Instruction emphasizes fluent reading through connected texts, while continued development of phonemic awareness supports advanced word reading. As students become more proficient readers, greater focus is placed on language comprehension, including identifying main ideas and key details, distinguishing fact from opinion, and analyzing literary elements such as plot, setting, and point of view across a range of genres. Vocabulary instruction is explicit and systematic, supporting understanding of word meanings, word relationships, and multiple-meaning words. Writing instruction is integrated with reading, as students use grammar, spelling, and sentence construction skills to compose opinion, informational, and narrative pieces, using linking and sequence words to organize ideas. Students also develop research skills by gathering information from multiple sources to answer questions and produce short reports. Speaking and listening opportunities are embedded throughout to support language development. A printed Parent and Teacher Guide is included to support learning at home.
TEACHER SERVICES
All course teachers are certified, subject-area content experts. The teacher will grade student assessments and provide detailed feedback. The course teacher is available to answer student questions via email, during scheduled office hours, or by virtual appointment. The teacher will carry out documented modifications and accommodations that are applicable to the online course. Progress monitoring and supplemental material will be provided by the teacher as needed.
AUTO-GRADED COURSE
Auto-graded courses are self-paced, multimodal, and standards-aligned. Students progress independently and are assessed frequently through weekly checkpoints and Mastery Assessments. Upon submission of assessments, students receive immediate answers and feedback and can mark the completion of work via a completion button in the learning management system. These courses allow students to work at their own pace and spend the necessary time on course content to ensure mastery.
